Enhancing the health, longevity, safety, and beauty of trees.
Structural and Safety Pruning
Tree Pruning:
Pruning (or trimming) trees is an art and a science. Understanding the species, the growth, long-term health, and the future plans for a tree are all considered when we perform this service for clients throughout the Finger Lakes and Rochester Regions.
Promoting the overall health of the tree is always at the forefront. Our Arborists’ keen eyes and experience make pruning jobs a rewarding endeavor for us, you, your landscape, and the trees.
Purpose-Driven Pruning
It all begins with a conversation between our ISA Certified Arborists® and you, the client. We believe pruning should never be arbitrary. Each pruning plan is developed with defined purposes, which may include:
Improving structure to reduce the likelihood of failure
Removing dead, dying, or diseased wood to promote vitality
Providing clearance from buildings, utilities, and walkways
Managing risk while preserving the tree’s natural form
Supporting young tree development for long-term stability
Proper tree pruning is essential to the long-term health, structure, and safety of your trees. Our approach is rooted in industry best practices and guided by tree biology, ensuring every cut supports natural growth while reducing risk.
Techniques, Timing, and Results
-

Proper Pruning Techniques
We use proven pruning methods that protect the tree’s natural defense systems and promote efficient wound closure:
– Cuts are made at the proper location to support natural healing
– Excessive pruning and harmful practices like topping are avoided
– Live foliage removal is carefully limited to prevent stress
– Crown cleaning, thinning, and reduction are performed only when appropriate
Our goal is to preserve the tree’s natural form while improving strength, balance, and performance.

Timing Matters
Tree pruning is most effective when timed correctly. We consider seasonal conditions, growth cycles, and environmental stress factors to minimize impact and maximize benefit, whether pruning shade trees, ornamentals, or large mature specimens.
Special consideration is taken for species at higher risk for disease or infection, including fruiting trees and Oak trees.
Winter is often a preferred time as a tree’s dormant state and cold temperatures (under 40 degrees) minimizes exposure to certain disease and fungi.
While there have been a limited number of cases of Oak Wilt in our area, it is of great concern. Oak Wilt is a fungal disease that is lethal to many Oaks. It is caused by the fungus Bretziella fagacearum which is spread via spore mats the Oaks host in the Spring/Summer. The fruity smell of these spore mats attract beetles and other insects which feed on the mats, often accumulating spores on the surface of their bodies. Pruning cuts create small wounds which secrete sap during warmer seasons, attracting the beetles that feed on the sap and can transfer fungal spores into the fresh wound, infecting the tree. Pruning Oak trees in winter greatly reduces the risk of an Oak Wilt infection as the fungal mats and beetles are not active during winter dormant periods.

Safety & Longevity
Strategic pruning is one of the most effective ways to manage tree risk and extend the life of your trees. By correcting structural issues early and maintaining balanced canopies, we help trees better withstand wind, snow, and storms, helping keep people, property, and pets safe.
Our Certified Arborists® use knowledge of tree biology and growth patterns to make specific pruning or trimming cuts that will help maintain the tree’s natural lifespan while increasing health and beauty.
Why choose our team?
Our tree pruning services are performed by ISA Certified Arborists® and skilled climbers who bring precision, safety, and attention to detail to every job. They understand tree biology, biomechanics, and safety at the highest level meaning cleaner cuts, healthier trees, and pruning that holds up over time. The results look natural, perform better, and support the long-term value of your landscape.
FAQ: How is Tree Trimming different from Tree Pruning?
Tree Trimming focuses primarily on appearance and clearance whereas Tree Pruning is a strategic, health-focused practice performed with the tree’s biology and structure in mind.
